Surgance Sets Sights on 2010

The Surgance movement has never had more momentum. All over the country and in other nations, grassroots leaders are using the Surgance nonprofit platform to do good things. Communities are being transformed and lives are being changed for the better.

As we look forward to the coming year, know that there is nearly as much work being done behind the scenes to support the movement as there is out front with people making a difference in communities from Arizona to Zambia. The Surgance staff, board of directors and key partners are focused on building a sustainable and strong infrastructure to support social entrepreneurs and innovators that want to make their world a better place for years to come.

Key areas of emphasis for Surgance in 2010: Operations, Fundraising, Communications and Community.

In the area of operations, Surgance will be refining our central and programming operational plans. The growth of our programs and rapid expansion into new places requires that we operate efficiently in order to provide the most value to our donors while ushering in as much change as we can. Handing proven systems and structures to grassroots leaders allows them to execute programs locally bigger, faster and more efficiently than ever.

In regard to fundraising, we will be focused on telling our story and asking people to join us in making the world a better place. Surgance is not interested in asking people to volunteer or give to us if they are not interested in our mission to transform communities and change lives through empowering grassroots leaders and volunteers to usher in positive change in bigger, faster and more efficient ways than they could on their own. However, we are bringing innovation to the social sector. And we have a proven track record of bringing businesses, governments, nonprofits, churches and faith-based organizations together with individuals to collaborate as a coalition (and force) for good. If that excites people or organizations, we are going to ask them to support the movement through giving.

Communications will be extremely important in 2010. The Surgance universe is diverse and stretched across many time zones. The communications team is hard at work developing internal and external processes to ensure we are able to notify, train, recruit and document best practices as we share our incredible story.

Teambuilding is a challenge for us. Our key leadership numbers about 60-100 from coast to coast and border to border as well as in a couple of other countries. If Surgance were simply an organization, we would do things one way. But Surgance is a movement and that makes all the difference in the world. We desire to see Surgance shaped and supported by those that gain the most use from it and therefore we are interested in creating community within the movement. We'll be working on this in 2010 as a small and diverse taskforce is on it, looking to be intentional about connections and communication internally amongst our key leadership and volunteers.

This gives you a quick overview of our areas of emphasis for 2010. We'd love to have you join us in helping to shape any of these strategies. If you would like to make a difference with your skill set, please email me directly (brian@surgance.com) and we'll get you pointed in the right direction.

All the best,
